Clown loach aquarium setup

You need to provide your Clown Loaches with a 100 L (20 G) aquarium or larger. They grow slowly compared to many other fish species, but they will become large eventually and need at least 540 L (125 G). This should be considered an absolute minimum, and more space is always better. The Clown Loach is a phenomenal jumper, so the aquarium has to be covered and properly sealed.

Use sand or fine gravel to cover the bottom of the aquarium, since the Clown Loach appreciates a substrate that allows it to dig. The aquarium should ideally be decorated with plants. Floating plants is a good way of dimming the light, and will make the Clown Loach more active and entertaining during the day. If you keep juvenile Clown Loaches, most plants will do well in the aquarium, but adult Clown Loaches should only be kept with hardy plant species, such as Anubias and Java fern. Adult Clown Loaches will eat or destroy less hardy plants.

The aquarium decoration should also include several caves and other hiding places, since a Clown Loach without hiding places will become extremely stressed. The hiding places should be small and the Clown Loach should ideally barely be able to squeeze it self into them. Each Clown Loach should be provided with several hiding places to choose from. You can let your imagination loose when creating hiding places for your Clown Loach and use all sorts of things, such as roots, rocks, flower pots, PVC pipes and coconuts. Avoid decorating with sharp objects, since the Clown Loach can hurt itself on sharp or pointy items.

You might think that your Clown Loach is stuck when you find it tucked into a tiny cave, under a rock or behind some aquarium equipment, but this is usually not the case. The Clown Loach loves to dig itself into narrow places where it can feel safe.

Good filtration in the aquarium is necessary, since the Clown Loach is sensitive to poor water quality. It will also appreciate high water circulation, since the Clown Loach lives in water currents in the wild.
